Council's litter and waste workshop offer for schools

October is Ireland’s National Reuse Month and to celebrate Westmeath County Council is offering 12 workshops on the themes of Litter and Waste.

The workshops will be tailored to suit primary and secondary schools in the county and will be delivered on an online app (the workshops can be pre-recorded) for a live, interactive, hands-on educational experience.

Launching the workshops, the cathaoirleach, Cllr Ken Glyn, said: “The whole school community have worked tirelessly to get students back to school and these online workshops are a new way of delivering support to them.

“The workshops support the Green School Programme themes of ‘Litter and Waste’ and ‘Global Citizenship Litter and Waste’.

“The workshops also support Reuse Month and will provide inspiration, skills and tools to reuse more at home, at work and at play in a fun and interactive manner,” said Cllr Glynn.

National Reuse Month.

Reuse is about valuing what we have, by using and reusing it for as long and as often as possible.

For example, you may have already reused by getting shoes resoled rather than replacing them or borrowing books from the library.

Reuse Month asks everyone to go further in October by prioritising repair, buying second hand and upcycled, borrowing, swapping and refilling.

“The workshops include a talk on the topic, group discussion and games, hands-on activities and investigations that make it an engaging experience for the participants,” said Ruth Maxwell from the council’s Environment Department.
