The night Johnny Cash played Mullingar!

The year was 1963 and Johnny Cash came to town.

He was on a ten night tour of Ireland, and Cash played twelve venues including ballrooms in Mullingar, Mallow, Dundalk and Athy.

Accompanied by the Tennessee Three and June Carter, the group also played a big concert in the National Stadium in Dublin.

In Mullingar, he performed at the Lakeland Ballroom, before having to leave to play another gig at a different venue.

The tour came at a hard time for the American star, however.

Having sold eleven million records worldwide, his record company were unhappy with him.

He was struggling with addiction to alcohol and amphetamines, and had just begun a relationship with Carter, a secret affair as both Johnny and June were married at the time.
