King the latest player to retire from Westmeath camogie panel

Delvin’s Sarah King has become the third Westmeath senior camogie player to retire from the panel in recent weeks.

In a post on Facebook yesterday, the experienced defender said that she was calling it a day after 14 years in the Westmeath jersey.

King’s departure follows that of Lake County legend Pamela Greville, who called time on her inter-county career weeks after her brother, Johnny, announced the end of his hugely successful stint as manager.

A fortnight ago, the Maroons’ All-Ireland intermediate championship-winning skipper Mairéad McCormack also announced her decision to retire.

“After 14 years playing the best sport in the world with my best friends, my county camogie journey has come to an end,” King said in her post.

“When I started out playing for Westmeath as a teenager, I could only dream that one day we might get to play in Croke Park, win an All-Ireland and play senior championship – big dreams one would have thought. I am delighted to have been part of the Westmeath teams that achieved these goals.

“I truly have some of the greatest memories from playing with my county. I hope that all camogie players in Westmeath get the same opportunities I and my teammates were afforded.

“Thank you to the management teams, Westmeath Camogie and most importantly the players who made and continue to make all these dreams possible. I played with fabulous groups of girls over the years and have made friends for life.

“It is all about the journey, the friends you make along the way and most importantly the people you share it all with.”

King, a primary school teacher, was with Westmeath all the way through its memorable inter-county journey from 2012 to date. She featured at corner-back in 2012 when Noel Boyce’s charges won the Nancy Murray Cup (All-Ireland junior ‘A’), and subsequently won an All-Ireland premier junior medal (2017), before picking up Leinster and All-Ireland intermediate medals in the following years.

In October, she played at wing back as Westmeath recorded an historic win over Limerick in their debut at All-Ireland senior level.

At club level, she was one of the stars for Delvin as they won a Westmeath junior camogie title in 2018 and reached a Leinster final.
