A memory from this time last year: the Mullingar Harriers quartet of Vicky Harris, Charles Okafor, Shauna Leydon, Oisin Lane, Leinster Star Award winners for 2019.

Mullingar Harriers: Virtual Medley Road League underway

The results of the first of six rounds of the members-only Medley Road League that had taken place the weekend before were confirmed last Tuesday.

Round one was a 3k and nearly 70 adult club members ran the distance alone within 5k of home on either the Saturday or Sunday, timed themselves with a GPS device and submitted proof of their times. Conditions were very cold and windy either day, but at least most could organise themselves to run the distance with the wind on their back for most if not all of the distance, which helped.

The times submitted were then age graded, which adjusts the times to reflect the effort of someone in their twenties and nicely balances out the results across the wide age range of our adult senior and master members. After round one, the top three places were filled by Eddie Newman, Maurice Looby and Alan Crowley, and the top three women were Mary Stuart, Aine O’Reilly and Michelle O’Halloran.

Round two is a 5k and can be run either this coming Saturday or Sunday.

Online AGM

The club’s Annual General Meeting will be held online this Friday evening at 8pm. The AGM will be held using Microsoft Teams and members should email info@mullingarharriers.com requesting a link to the meeting.

Membership for 2021

Thank you to everyone who has paid their annual club membership so far. All other members are asked to pay their membership fee as soon as possible. Many are currently following structured training plans set out by our coaches.

While following these plans, members are covered by the club insurance, in the unfortunate event of an accident while training. However, where a membership has not been paid and in the event of a claim, this claim may not be covered. We therefore encourage all outstanding fees to be paid as soon as possible.

This time last year

In normal times, around now we would be reporting on the Athletics Leinster Star Awards but as the only Leinster events last year were the Leinster Indoors, there are no awards to be presented for 2020, but we can look back to 2019 when Vicky Harris, Shauna Leydon, Charles Okafor and Oisín Lane were presented with their Athletics Leinster Star Awards for 2019.

Earning the awards based on performances in Leinster Championships in 2019, Vicky won the Senior Award, the seventh time in eight years that she had won this award, Shauna won the Female Juvenile Award, Charles won the Male Juvenile Award, and Oisin won the Race Walk Award.

After a very successful cross country season in 2019 when Mullingar won Club team medals in 14 of the 18 underage races in Leinster cross country, Mullingar retained the Morrissey Cup for best juvenile club in cross country in Leinster.

Reflecting the very big haul of 32 medals won by Mullingar athletes at the Leinster Juvenile Indoors in 2019, including five Championship Best Performances, Mullingar won the Mick Byrne Cup for Leinster Juvenile Individual Indoor Championships.

At the Irish University Indoors, Sarah Glennon (DCU) won gold in the 1,500m race walk, Claire Fagan (DCU) won gold in the 3,000m, and College records were set by Patrick Leydon (NUI Maynooth) in the 400m and by Andrew Daly (Technological University Dublin) in the 800m.
