Public asked to make views on town bus service known

A local public representative has appealed to the public to make submissions on the contentious new town bus service proposed for Mullingar.

At the conclusion of last Friday’s Planning and Transportation SPC meeting, Cllr Aoife Davitt (FF) stressed the need for anyone with a view on the new bus link to get their submissions on the three routes put forward in on time.

She acknowledged that there is “huge talk” about the new bus service and concerns about some of the three possible routes going through built-up areas since they were announced.

However, Cllr Davitt said they will continue consultation with residents in those areas, and it’s vital that they, the residents, make their views known to the council.

“They need to make a submission. That’s the most important point,” she said of anyone with an opinion on the three possible routes the bus may take.

Welcoming the idea of a local bus service for the county town, Cllr Denis Leonard observed that they need a consultation process as robust as possible, but he would hate to see it “torpedoed” because of concerns.

There will have to be a compromise, he suggested, repeating that a local bus service would be a “welcome addition” to Mullingar.

Director of services, Barry Kehoe, agreed that people should register their views on the new public transport service in the town.
