Gardai issue warning after spike in catalytic converter thefts

Gardai are advising local motorists to be careful about where they park their cars at night following a recent spike in catalytic converter thefts.

The Wesmeath Division issued this statement on social media:

There has been a large increase in the theft of catalytic converters in recent months with six stolen in both Mullingar and Athlone districts since January, 12 in total.

The rise in the price of palladium, rhodium and platinum has had the effect of causing catalytic converter theft to soar.

Car parks, with around 40%, are the most likely place for a theft to occur and the rest being private driveways and road ways.

Garages and scrap yards/dismantlers are also at risk.

The best way to stop this happening to you is

1. Park the car in the garage of your home if you have one.

2. Park as near to the kerb as you can on the roadway.

3. Don't park with two wheels on the kerb as this assists the criminal.

4. Park in a well lit area or in an area of good surveillance. Try and park with bonnet to the wall.

5. Check and see if your car alarm has an anti tilt sensor included.

6. Consider installing a cage clamp, google will show you images.

7. Your garage mechanic might put a spot weld on the bolts holding the converter to stop bolt being turned.

If you see someone at or underneath a car take as much details as possible and call us.
