Coláiste Mhuire team complete their Paris2Nice challenge

On Friday last, teacher Micheál Lawler and principal Malachy Flanagan presented a cheque for €1160 to Frank Dillon and Noel Murphy of Mullingar Lions Club for the Paris2Nice Fundraising Challenge.

The Coláiste Mhuire activity involved firstly 30 teachers walking, running and cycling 2824km over the last three weeks. This coincided with the students engaging in the project during their PE and Wellbeing classes with extra exercise and activity put in to meet their targets.

Organiser-in-chief Micheál Lawler said that Paris2Nice event could not have come at a better time and fitted in perfectly with the school motto, Positivity, Pride and Performance.

Micheál said the project was an ideal tonic for all the staff as they were delighted to have a team focus to finish off the year, after everything being so singular over the last 15 months.

There was great banter and camaraderie among all the staff and a healthy competitive edge thrown in. On Wednesday last a number of teachers enjoyed a diving experience at Lough Owel to complete the venture.

Malachy stressed how important it is for the Coláiste Mhuire school community to support a local charity and contribute to the projects that Mullingar Lions Club are involved in.

They are always striving to create a better link with the wider community where so many of their students reside, he said.

In thanking Malachy and all the Coláiste Mhuire staff and students, Frank Dillon expressed the heartfelt and huge gratitude of Mullingar Lions Club, not just for this generous donation, but for all their generosity over the years. It was, he said, a reflection of their true spirit and ethos.

The Paris2Nice Challenge got a further boost this week with the news that Jack Cooney, Westmeath senior football manager, his back-up team and entire county panel are lending their support, and they have an activity planned for this week.

After their successful Movathon, it is great to have their goodwill and support for the Lions Club projects, said Frank: “We applaud their team spirit and commitment and wish them good luck throughout the season.”
