Castlepollard knitters delighted to win overall Cathaoirleach Award

The M4 Women’s Group and Knitting Club was set up in 2013 by Michelle Raleigh and is now run by Carmel Fitzsimons and Trish Ryder, along with Phil McCormack, who brought the group to meets every week in Castlepollard Library.
Carmel Fitzsimons said they were delighted with their win and she was pleasantly surprised to hear they had got the big prize of the 2020 Cathaoirleach Awards.
“We were surprised because there were so many great other people and groups in it, and other great causes. It’s lovely because the knitting is all voluntary,” Carmel said.
“It’s lovely to think that there’s some little baby getting something that you made to keep it safe and keep it warm. And it’s nice to think you’re showing the girls a new skill they can bring home and try with the grandchildren,” she said.
Carmel has been in the group for seven years and loves the work they do but also the social aspect of the group.
“It’s just to get together, all the women, and to get us out and a bit of support and comfort. We do a bit of crafts, and get people in to talk and then a few little outings too,” Carmel said.
“I’d like to say it keeps us sane, but sometimes you run into a difficult bit knitting, but it’s a good laugh and a get-together and a chat. It gets us out of the house and mixing with each other,” Carmel said.
At the moment, the group have not been able to meet due to the Covid-19 pandemic and Carmel said going online does not suit the group, so they are eagerly awaiting the return of the group so that they can celebrate the win together.
