Lot 443, ‘Fireball II’.

Westmeath interest in upcoming auction

There is Westmeath interest in an upcoming sale at The Auction Rooms in Kells, the auctioneer Oliver Usher has told the Westmeath Examiner.

“In particular, lot 267 is of ‘Bracklyn Posy 3rd’, Supreme Champion, Female Champion and 1st prize winner in the RDS Spring Show 1958. In the photograph receiving the award is Peter McCarthy’s late father. Peter’s mother was a Fetherstonhaugh from Bracklyn,” said Mr Usher.

“Peter had a keen interest in all things equestrian, in particular with horse racing and breeding.

“There are many equestrian themed lots as part of the sale. A standout lot, however, is 443. This is a fine watercolour signed by ‘JC’ of ‘Fireball II’. It is a study of a saddled horse in a stable yard painted in the Victorian School style circa 1883. The frame is inscribed as being ‘presented by his excellency Earl Spencer’.

“Along with the items from the estate of Peter McCarthy, Willow Cottage, Stackallen there are good clearances from a doctor’s residence in Sligo and a doctor’s residence in Kells. Another interesting lot from Mullingar is lot 396 a fine Victorian Oak Extending Dining Table circa 8ft 6inch x 4ft 6inch.”

The auction is on Monday next, July 12, and begins at 11am; it will be live on easyliveauction.com.

If anyone would like to visit, The Auction Rooms will be open for viewing on Thursday July 8 from 10am to 5pm, Friday July 9 from 10am to 5pm, Saturday July 10 from noon to 5pm and Sunday July 11 from 2pm to 6pm.
