Motorist charged after extreme speed detected on M6 near Offaly border

A motorist was arrested this morning (Monday) after their vehicle was detected driving at an astonishing 198 kilometres per hour on the M6 motorway near the Offaly border.

The speed was detected by Gardai on the M6 at Cullenagower, Moate, at 9.50am.

Details of the incident were shared by An Garda Siochana on social media a short time ago.

Its post described the speed in question as "so unacceptable" to other road users, and urged motorists to slow down.

An Garda Siochana shared this image after the motorist was detected travelling at 198km per hour.

A detection of 198 kilometres per hour is 78 kilometres, or 65%, above the motorway speed limit.

The Garda statement about the incident said the driver had been arrested and charged with dangerous driving, and is due to appear before Athlone District Court at a later date.
