Speeding cyclists

Cyclists are "going at an alarming rate" along improved cycleways and lines are needed to ensure the safety of all users, claimed Mullingar mayor, Aoife Davitt, at the monthly meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad.

Executive engineer, Pat Kavanagh, said that the council do not generally line cycleways, but this is likely to be reviewed as they grow in popularity.

Traffic lights at St Colman’s NS

An on-site meeting with the district engineer to examine the need for traffic lights on the N52, close to St Colman’s NS, and the adjoining crèche, was called for by Cllr Michael Dollard at the monthly meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad. He was supported by Cllr Emily Wallace and the town mayor, Cllr Aoife Davitt.

The meeting was told that there is a school warden there and there are no plans for pedestrian lights. However, the matter will be referred to the district engineer.

Dalton Park ‘rat run’

A junction in Dalton Park, Mullingar, is being used as "a rat run" from Robinstown Road to the town, according to Cllr Mick Dollard. He has called for a one-way-system to be introduced there.

At the July meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad, Cllr Dollard proposed that the council carry out a road traffic survey between Nos 137 and 138 Dalton Park, where there is a serious safety problem.

He was supported by chairperson, Cllr Aoife Davitt. The members were assured that road traffic safety at that location would be reviewed.

Stream peril

Pedestrian are being placed in peril because of a stream running alongside the road at Ballagh, between Castlepollard Road and Delvin Road, Mullingar, according to the mayor of Mullingar, Cllr Aoife Davitt.

She claimed, at the monthly meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad, that pedestrians were forced to stand in when a car came along and that the area around the stream was unsafe.

She urged the council to "look at it before something happens". Cllr Davitt was assured that this area will be examined and if warranted, an application can be made to the 2022 Low Cost Safety Improvement Scheme.
