Thundery showers bring risk of localised flooding

A status yellow rain and thunderstorm warning remains in place for all of Ireland this morning (Thursday).

Scattered heavy downpours and thunderstorms are expected in some areas today with a warning that localised flooding may occur where the rainfall is heaviest.

The Met Éireann alert came into effect yesterday morning and remains in place until noon today.

Conditions are set to become cooler and a little fresher over the coming days but the the weather is expected to become somewhat more settled once again over the weekend and to start next week.

The latest weather forecast is giving for heavy thundery showers or longer spells of rain this morning (Thursday) with further heavy showers developing this afternoon and evening, especially in the midlands, with a continued risk of isolated thunderstorms and localised flooding.

While there will be a good deal of cloud about, there will be occasional bright spells also. Highest temperatures of 17 to 22 degrees in mostly light variable breezes.

Tonight will be cloudy with scattered showers continuing, some may be heavy or thundery early in the night. Very mild and humid with temperatures not falling below 13 to 16 degrees. Some mist and fog will set in later in the night in mostly light and variable breezes, though increasing moderate to occasionally fresh northwesterly over Munster and along Atlantic coasts.

Mostly cloudy on Friday with scattered showers once more, they will generally be lighter than previous days but some may turn heavy in east Ulster and Leinster during the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures of 15 to 20 degrees, in mostly moderate west to northwest winds.

The chance of showers on Friday night will become mainly confined to Ulster and Atlantic coasts with long clear spells developing elsewhere. Overnight lows of 11 to 15 degrees, mist and fog patches developing in mostly light westerly breezes.

Saturday should feel fresher with a mix of sunny spells and just well scattered patchy showers mostly over Ulster and Atlantic coastal counties. Highest temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees, in a light westerly breeze.

Mostly dry with clear spells on Saturday night and just some well scattered patches of rain or drizzle. Overnight lows of 9 to 13 degrees, mist and fog patches will develop once again in light northerly or variable breezes.

Sunny spells are forecas for Sunday, however cloud will increase at times during the day bringing the chance of patchy mist and drizzle at times. Feeling autumnal, in light variable breezes, with highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees. On Sunday night there will be good clear spells however there will be some low cloud at times leading to some patchy drizzle. Overnight lows of 8 to 13 degrees, mist and fog patches developing also in light east to southeast breezes.

Good sunny spells again on Monday but some showers will develop through the middle of the day, mostly in the west. Highest temperatures of 17 to 20 degrees in light southerly or variable breezes.

Current indications suggest that from Tuesday onwards it will become more unsettled with rain and showers at times and highs in the mid to high teens.
