Booms installed on Royal Canal following oil spillage

Booms were installed on a section of the Royal Canal in Mullingar last week following a "minor" oil spillage.

The booms were placed on the section of the canal near the Dublin bridge last Friday after Waterways Ireland were notified of the spillage. The booms are being removed today (Wednesday).

Following a query by the Westmeath Examiner, Waterways Ireland issued this statement:

“Waterways Ireland was notified of a minor spill from a petrol can on a boat on the Royal Canal, Mullingar last Friday, October 1, which has now been removed from the harbour. To trap the petrol and to protect animal and plant life, Waterways Ireland immediately placed booms in the canal locally. The booms are being removed today.”
