Profit not the motive for Georgie's children's books

A former student of Mullingar Community College has published two children’s books and is selling copies of them online.

Georgie Allen (25) went to school in Mullingar Community College and then on to study graphic design in AIT, where she wrote her books.

The books are called ‘Storm’ and ‘Love’ and are geared at primary school children, mostly up until the age of nine, that may be going through a difficult time.

“I decided to write these two children’s books based on the idea of writing something that would appeal to a child that is going through something difficult, trauma in particular,” Georgie said.

Georgie used a link she had through college, Digital Printing Ireland, to print her books and she then put them up for sale on a website called Etsy.

Georgie has managed to sell 43 copies of her books so far; however she mentioned that there is no real profit.

“If you want to talk monetary gain, there is absolutely none,” Georgie laughed.

“But I knew that going in. Selling kid’s books is an extremely difficult thing to do if you want to make money,” Georgie said.

“I thought though it was a good thing to do, to get the books out there and not have them sitting in my apartment doing nothing; let’s have actual kids who need them have them, so I thought ‘let’s give this a shot’.”

Georgie mentioned that it was an aim of hers to write the books without a strict family mould, so that kids from all kinds of households could relate to and enjoy them.

“With these books, there’s always a child and while there may be an adult figure, there’s no specified gender or anything so it could be anyone,” Georgie said.

“It’s so they can be accessible to any child, and no one feels left out reading it.”

Georgie has received positive feedback. One customer said her books deliver a “meaningful message delivered in a way that (kids) will understand”.

Readers have also mentioned that Georgie’s books are “beautifully illustrated, and their significance is perfect for the times we are living in now (Covid-19)”.

Both of Georgie’s books are €8 each and can be bought online by searching 'PiecesbyGeorgie' and here.

Georgie is from just outside Mullingar and lives in Ballymahon.
