Civic reception to be held for Prof Ó Catháin for bringing university status to Athlone

A civic reception is to be held to honour Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin, former President of Athlone Institute of Technology, for his immense work and outstanding achievements in guiding Athlone Institute of Technology to university status.

Speaking at the October meeting of Westmeath County Council, Cllr Aengus O’Rourke proposed the Council host a civic reception for Prof Ó Catháin, saying that he “stuck his neck out” for the town and the college and was instrumental not only in getting university status for AIT, but also for showcasing the town when foreign investors visited.

He was seconded by Cllr John Dolan who said that Prof Ó Catháin has had an impact on the whole region. He said he played an important part in getting the powerhouse of industry that is in Athlone.

"A civic reception is the least we can do," he added.

Cllr Tom Farrell said he sat on the board of governors of the AIT and saw the work Prof Ó Catháin did in getting university status for the college.

The Mayor of Athlone, Cllr Frankie Keena marvelled at how much he delivered for the college where he is “highly respected by all the staff and students” and with whom he “resonates”.

Cllr Aengus O'Rourke said he was delighted that his proposal received unanimous support at the meeting.

"I strongly believe that people who make a significant and lasting beneficial mark on Athlone should be recognised for doing so," he continued.

"It is therefore only right and proper that Ciarán's work and achievements are acknowledged by Westmeath County Council. I know the staff, students, local business community and the people of Athlone would see this as fitting and worthy gesture.

He said delivering on turning Athlone into a university town was "no mean feat" and that Ciarán demonstrated "great foresight, determination and skill in his pursuit of University status for Athlone."

"And, we all know what this elevated status for Athlone and the Midlands means; more jobs, greater opportunities for young people and a range of economic benefits.

"For the past 22 years Ciarán has been a champion for Athlone, inside and outside the college. He is a founding member of the Midlands Gateway Chamber, he delivered the International Athletics Arena and he was instrumental in attracting inward investment to Athlone and the midlands area over the course of the past two decades.

"I believe it is appropriate to recognise these wonderful achievements," Cllr O'Rourke concluded.
