Speech on humour wins twice at Toastmasters

Lorraine Murphy was a double winner at the first Mullingar Toastmasters meeting in October. It was the club’s Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest, chaired by Anke Von Banau, and with a theme of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. Loarraine didn't stop winning there though, as she also won at the area contest - details below.

Anke’s team were: Zoom-master, Linda Gavagan; Sergeant at Arms, Deirdre Ó Murchadha; timers, Maria Costello and Marie Dolan; and vote counters, Timothy Green and Marie Dolan; plus a panel of judges led by John Waldron.

There were five speakers in the Humorous Category and six in the Table Topics Sections.

The contestants in the former were: Mags Healy Donoghue, ‘Driving Me Mad’; Pat Kenny, ‘The Bull and the Bully Boys’; Brian McLoughlin, ‘PC’; Lorraine Murphy, ‘Funny Girl’; and Damien Rooney, ‘Nobody talks like that’.

They were all highly entertaining and humorous, and Lorraine was awarded first place for her speech about how she used humour to get her through life. Damien was second and Pat was third. Two contestants were disqualified on exceeding the timing.

The contestants for the Table Topics Competition were Anne Drury, Mags Healy Donoghue, Pat Kenny, Pauline McCabe, Brian McLoughlin and Lorraine Murphy. Each contestant had to speak for one and a half minutes on ‘Would you rather be rich than good looking?’. Lorraine won again, ahead of Mags and Pat.

This double win in the speech and table topics contest was a fantastic achievement for Lorraine Murphy and she went on to represent the club at the area contest on October 17.
