An appeal to the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad to follow through on a commitment to install litter bins close to all primary walking routes around Mullingar has been made by Cllr Ken Glynn.

At the district’s November meeting, Cllr Glynn was informed that under the Litter Management Plan 2017-2019, it is now a policy of Westmeath County Council to reduce the number of litter bins in public areas and to encourage people to bring their litter home for disposal.

“In keeping with that adopted policy, Westmeath County Council would not propose to relocate bin or increase frequency of maintenance at this location,” a written reply to his request stated, adding that the litter management plan is currently under review.

Cllr Glynn countered that earlier in the year, a commitment was given by the previous director of services that some bins would be provided near long walking routes, and a plan was to have been brought back to the members.
