Mullingar hosted Rathgars 2nds ON Saturday morning in Wilson’s Hospital School. After the 2-1 win for Rathgar when they hosted Mullingar at the start of the season, Mullingar were keen to not let them get the double over them. Also Mullingar were keen to keep the fabulous goal scoring run going after bagging nine goals in the last two games.

Mullingar started extremely slow and made Rathgar look very good. Rathgar were passing the ball very well and making it hard for Mullingar to get any kind of control on the game. But when Mullingar did get hold of the ball they weren’t far off opening the score sheet with Marc Watters hitting the sideboard twice and Takudzwa Hwato coming close.

After the first water break Mullingar knew what they had to do with the ball before Rathgar took total control of the game. Mullingar did just that and completely dominated the game. They made their dominance count by getting the first goal of the game. It was a brilliant team goal, Hwato passed the ball to Stuart Synnott who then passed the ball to Watters waiting in the ‘D’. Watters took one touch and passed it to Hwato who overlapped and was waiting at the penalty spot. Hwato was then one and one with the keeper and slotted it pass to the right hand side of the goal. Mullingar then made it 2-0 from a short corner after Watters deflected drag flick went flying into the top right hand corner.

After half time Mullingar kept with the lovely hockey but they weren’t settling on it. They were searching for their third goal but it didn’t come and it was Rathgar who looked like scoring. However, the Mullingar defence of Stephen Wiltshire, Craig Sweeny, Glen Parnell and Sören Marl kept their line well and defended their ‘D’ extremely well.

In the final quarter Rathgar were pushing a lot of players up to try get the goal they so wanted. Mullingar made them pay for having so many players attacking. Mullingar made it 3-0 when Holger Marl got the ball to Watters on the left wing. Watters then saw the darting run of Owen Wiltshire, Watters gave Owen a beautiful aerial pass and with absolute ease he brought it down, ran into the ‘D’ and knocked the ball past the Rathgar keeper's left before passing the ball into the empty goal. Mullingar then made it 4-0 when David Kingston got on the scoresheet. After a brilliant ball into the ‘D’, Kingston deflected the ball into the goals past the keeper.

Mullingar: Tommy Crowley (GK), Stephen Wiltshire, Craig Sweeny, Sören Marl, Glen Parnell, Tom Bowers, Takudzwa Hwato, Stuart Synnott, Josh McCormack, Holger Marl (Captain), Marc Watters, David Kingston and Owen Wiltshire.
