WATCH: Mullingar home's Christmas lights a huge hit with young and old

In recent years visiting Andrew Conway's house in D'Alton Park to marvel at his Christmas lights display has become a modern tradition for many Mullingar families.

Andrew starts work on the lights in the first week in November to make sure that they are ready to be turned on the same day that the lights in Mullingar's town centre are switched on for the first time.

He estimates that there are around 15,000 thousands bulbs covering the front of his house and his roof, which he turns on every evening from 5.30pm to just after 9pm.

Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner on Thursday evening when we visited his home to record a video, Andrew revealed that because the lights are LED they only cost around 50 cents an hour to run. Some of his larger Christmas lights cost significantly more and a number of them were kindly sponsored by his employer Michael Wallace of Wallace Waste Solutions, for which Andrew is very grateful, he says.

It may be a lot of effort, but Andrew says that he is pleased that his display, which he started seven years ago, attracts hundreds if not thousands of people to his house every year. Unsurprisingly, it is particularly popular with young families.

“We do it for the community and the kids. We have sweets and lollipops,” he said.

Andrew's partner Denise Gallagher said that while the lights attract a lot of people every year, there was a marked increase in the number of visitors last year.

“We get a lot of people down. They come from all over the town. It's well known. Especially last year, with Covid and stuff people had no where else to go.”

In these dark days, Andrew says that he is happy to bring a bit of light, literally and figuratively, into people's lives and to spread some Christmas cheer.

“I absolutely adore Christmas. If we could put it up all year around, I would,” he said.
