Finneran appointed manager of Westmeath ladies

Former Roscommon footballer Michael Finneran has been appointed as the new manager of the Westmeath senior ladies’ football team.

The appointment was announced at a meeting of Westmeath LGFA’s county board last night.

A member of the St Dominic’s club in Knockcroghery and a teacher by profession, Finneran brings a wealth of experience to the Westmeath role, having previously managed Roscommon ladies for four seasons. He led the Rossies to two Connacht intermediate titles and the semi-final stage of the All-Ireland IFC.

Former midfielder Finneran played at the highest level for Roscommon over a ten year period (2005-15), winning a Connacht SFC medal and two Allianz NFL titles.

He will be joined in the Westmeath setup by Marie Kelly as team administrator and Shane Monaghan as strength and conditioning coach, with remaining backroom team roles to be filled in the near future.

Finneran follows in the footsteps of Sean Finnegan, who stepped down as Westmeath manager in October, having steered the Lake County ladies to an All-Ireland IFC title while maintaining their top-flight status in the Ladies’ NFL. Finnegan has since taken up the role of manager with Kildare ladies.

“We wish Michael and his backroom team the very best in next year’s Division 1 League and the TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship,” said a Westmeath LGFA statement this morning.
