Westmeath TDs do not support mandatory vaccines

Mullingar’s three TDs are opposed to mandatory vaccination or enhanced restrictions for the unvaccinated.

A nationwide opinion poll published at the weekend found that 56 percent of people surveyed are in favour of increased work and travel restrictions for those who have not received a Covid-19 vaccine, while a number of European countries have already tightened restrictions for unvaccinated people, including Austria, which is also scheduled to introduce mandatory vaccination from February 1.

“I think independent public health authorities like the National Immunisation Advisory Committee provide essential guidance and independent advice on the merits of vaccines and the risk versus reward relationship,” he said.

Minister Burke said that while he has “no issue” with the Covid certificate being used as a “vehicle” to admit people to indoor settings and keeping businesses open, he would not support any further restrictions.

“It is all about choice. You just have to be mindful that people have bodily autonomy in this country and it’s enshrined in the constitution.
