Brothers Kevin and Martin Kelly.

‘Movment’ release second album and prepare for hometown gigs

Mullingar brother duo ‘Movment’ have released their second album, Transformation, alongside three new singles and self-created music videos.

Martin and Kevin Kelly have been playing music together for a long time, have previously released three albums with old band, Raw Novembre.

The brothers have since formed post punk band Movment as well as operating their own record label, Distort the Scene.

The duo had been working on the new album since 2018 and said that Covid-19 restrictions gave them plenty of time to develop it.

“Covid helped as it gave us more time to finish the album, as gigs and entertainment were brought to a standstill, and we had more time on our hands,” Kevin said.

The brothers said the theme of the album is transformation, hence the title, and some of the tracks examine and reflect on a changing world.

“In current times, with an avalanche of information through media and social media, it is difficult to know who to believe any more,” Kevin said.

“The overall theme is about how we need a transformation from where we are now. Everybody seems more on edge and less tolerant of other opinions these days.”

With better technology and their own record label, the brothers have reflected on how the process has been with this album.

“We are writing songs on an ongoing basis. So, there is never a problem with songs as such. It is just a matter of finalising the songs and recording them. These days, that is easier to do,” Martin said.

“Technology has made it easier, and there are a variety of new methods for writing songs. We never really wrote songs on just acoustic guitar and vocals. It was usually built from a beat and bass/guitars, with inspiration also coming from synths and effects. That hasn’t changed,” Kevin said.

“But there are lots of new methods for getting inspiration, and lots of new equipment to experiment with,” Kevin added.

Both brothers said they have similar musical taste and inspirations, with some exceptions, and they are always listening to a variety of artists and bands.

“Musically we have similar tastes, rock, some metal, indie, punk, post punk and so on,” Martin said.

“There is some overlap, but we do like a variety of genres. Once the music moves me, I will give it a chance,” Kevin added.

The duo named numerous bands they like, from Iron Maiden to Pixies, and said they get their inspiration from such bands without pinning themselves to one musical style.

“These bands have influenced the style of music we play, so we consider ourselves post punk and alternative rock. But listeners can make their own minds up,” Martin said.

The brothers have had plenty of experience performing live, having previously played gigs in the UK, Germany, and the USA.

Although Covid-19 restrictions have made gigging difficult recently, Movment have one upcoming gig in Mullingar and Martin said they hope to play more gigs in 2022.

Between December 27 and 30, the duo has been lined up to appear as part of the Mullingar Music Collective, a series of shows at The Stables to showcase local talent.

Movment’s music is available on all digital streaming platforms as well as in CD copy via movment.bandcamp.com and their three new singles have self-created videos on YouTube now.
