Planning board gives green light for Clonmellon development

An Bord Pleanála has given the green light for a new mixed use development in Clonmellon.

The planning authority upheld Westmeath County Council’s decision to grant planning permission to Anthony Kelly for a mixed use town centre development comprising residential units, commercial units and a multi-purpose community building. The application also includes details for the demolition of the existing public house and petrol station on the Main Street site.

According to the inspector’s Report by ABP, David Mooney Planning Consultant, representing Sandra Shanahan and Thomas Timmons, appealed to have the council’s decision overturned on a number of grounds, including concerns that “by virtue of its scale, mass and building footprint” the proposed development “would adversely impact the residential amenity” of the appellants’ dwelling and that the original design submitted “showed little attempt to integrate the proposal with the existing urban grain of the area”. Subject to 22 conditions, planning inspector Brendan Coyne upheld Westmeath County Council’s decision to grant planning permission for the proposed development. He said that the development “would not seriously injure the visual or residential amenities of the area or of property in the vicinity, and would be acceptable in terms of pedestrian and traffic safety and convenience”.

The development will consist of 10 two-bedroom terraced houses, two two-bed semi-detached houses, two one-bed duplex units, a two-bed duplex unit, three commercial units and a multi-purpose community building.
