Longford Fianna Fáil TD says 'all Covid restrictions' should be lifted

A Longford-Westmeath TD said this week it was "impossible to argue" with the view that all Covid-19 restrictions should now be lifted.

There is growing optimism that the wave of Omicron cases has peaked, and that an easing of restrictions may be introduced in the coming days.

On Twitter yesterday (Monday), Fianna Fáil TD Joe Flaherty indicated he would be in favour of a full reopening of society.

"It is impossible to argue with the case for ending all COVID restrictions," he tweeted.

"The health service has coped heroically with 500,000 cases per week for 3 weeks and the booster vaccine campaign is ramping up.

"Hospital and ICU numbers are stable as we head towards natural immunity."

He went on to state that businesses should be allowed to operate as normal, and that the Covid certificate required for indoor service in pubs and restaurants was no longer necessary.

"It is now time to allow our businesses and nighttime economy to operate as normal, and there's no reason why businesses and communities cannot work towards a Jan 26th re-opening," he wrote.

"Similarly, the Digit (sic) Covid Cert is no longer a necessary safeguard and should be pulled."
