Women are asked to ‘Give it a Try’

By Sarah Slevin

Mullingar Rugby Club have organised a new six-week programme for women new to rugby to help them ‘Give it a Try’.

The six-week programme will kick off on Tuesday January 25 at Shay Murtagh Park at 7.30pm. It has been designed for women over the age of 18, regardless of their sporting ability or level.

Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner, Tony Doolan of Mullingar Rugby club said they want to encourage more women to take up the sport.

“On the ground, Mullingar Rugby club want to do more to support and promote women’s rugby,” Tony said.

“We’re looking for new people and it’s a new year so a good time to pick up a new sport and make some new friends.”

For those nervous of trying a sport such as rugby, Tony reassured them that the programme is aimed at beginners.

Anna Scanlon, Susie Burzawa and Tracey Finerty.

“It’s structured for people who have never played rugby or sport before. It won’t be straight into full-on tackles, we will be focusing on catching, passing, and running with the ball for the first few weeks and then towards the last few weeks we will introduce tackling and build up slowly like that,” Tony said.

“It’s not like you’re thrown in the deep end right away, you can get a chance to get a feel for it. The programme is designed for beginners,” Tony added.

Mullingar Rugby club has also been enjoying growing numbers at underage level, with their youth and minis teams, which caters from under 7s up to 18s.
