Road safety audits sought by Duncan

Claims that there is no need for a safety audit at Blackhall/Dominick Place roundabout or speed ramps going into Raithin housing estate, Mullingar, were rejected by Cllr Andrew Duncan at a recent meeting of Mullingar/Kinnegad Municipal Council.

He was told that a safety audit had been carried out at the roundabout and no issues were highlighted. "There is an issue there", Cllr Duncan argued.

He said that sheer walls obstruct the eyeline of drivers coming from the Dominick Place direction. He asked that "a safety audit be carried out, end of story!"

"I’m not happy with the answer – I have seen several issues", he added.

Paul McCool, district manager, said that maybe something had been missed in the audit and undertook to have the matter re-examined.

In response to his call for speed ramps at Raithin, Cllr Duncan was told that, as previously advised, road markings had been upgraded in this estate and the markings on existing ramps had been renewed. There is no requirement for additional ramps as there is a 30km/hr speed limit in place, he was told.

Cllr Duncan said it was great to have a 30km/hr speed limit, but it was not enforceable. He urged that for the sake of a few speed ramps that could save some child being knocked down, the council revisit the issue and rethink the answer.
