Wilson’s student makes final of Soroptimists public speaking competition

Niamh Grier, a Form 4 student at Wilson’s Hospital School, was the joint winner of the regional final of the Soroptimists public speaking competition on January 22, hosted by the Athlone branch.

Niamh won her local round in November and faced opposition in this regional round from winners in counties Dublin, Drogheda, Meath, and Westmeath.

Niamh’s entry on ‘Breaking the Stereotype’ and the heroism of wartime nurse Edith Cavell was selected by judges in what was a very tight competition.

Niamh also performed well in the ‘Impromptu’ section in this round – where she had just two minutes to prepare followed by two minutes to deliver a speech on an unforeseen prompt word: ‘fashion’.

Niamh is pictured above with her teacher and coach Mr Burke and school principal Ms McShane.

She is now looking forward to the national final, which is scheduled for February 19 in the D Hotel, Drogheda. We wish her well.
