Elite BC boxers at Michael Andrews Championships

Mullingar Elite BC’s boxers have been back in action the over last few weekends in the Michael Andrews Championships in Dublin.

The club had nine boxers entered. Two pulled out due to illness and injury. Omair Sabir (B1, 30kg) was one of our hot prospects who we were certain would win gold. But Covid struck; thankfully he is fully recovered and will be aiming for the Leinsters.

We had three B1s entering their first championships: Maggie Mcdonagh, Christy Nevin and Michael Nevin. All three did their best and we couldn’t have asked for more. This will be a good learning curve for them.

We had two Boy 2s. First was Darren Joyce, who is a very slick boxer, and who lost out on the tightest of margins against a good lad from Dublin. We thought he was very unlucky not to get the decision. Second was Alex Carey, who has only had two fights prior to the competition.

He got to the final where he boxed a very experienced lad from Dunboyne. Alex gave his all in each round but his opponent’s experience showed. However, the improvement this lad showed after his first two fights has been amazing.

Our B3 Daniel Joyce received a walkover in the semis. He got into the ring, but his opponent failed to show. This meant Darren was straight into the final, where he would meet a very good boxer from Monkstown BC.

Darren left no stone unturned in the ring and put on a masterclass of boxing to win his second Michael Andrews title.

Sien Sibi also entered the ring in the semis and no opponent showed up. This meant he progressed to the final. Unfortunately Sien had to pull out of the final due to an injury suffered in training.

That left Cathal Nevin (Youth 2) who boxed a very good lad from Kilkenny. Cathal, who was much shorter than his opponent, started slow and it wasn’t looking good for him until he threw a big overhand right, which sent his opponent to the canvass. This gave Cathal confidence, and for three action packed rounds he took over.

In the end, we won two gold medals and two silver. We will be aiming to add to these in the upcoming Leinster Championships.
