Katie and Ireland women reach World Rugby Sevens series final

Mullingar’s Katie Heffernan is playing her part as Ireland’s women’s sevens rugby squad reached the final of the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series in Seville, Spain this afternoon.

Aiden McNulty’s Ireland charges face Australia in the final, starting at 6.56pm Irish time.

Former Loreto College, Mullingar student Heffernan was an unused sub in Ireland’s opening wins against Poland (14-10) and Brazil (29-12) on Friday, but took to the field against Russia as a sub in a 21-14 victory on Saturday.

The Mullingar RFC/Railway Union RFC star came on again as a sub against Canada in the quarter-final, and set Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe up for a try as the Irish ran out 36-12 winners.

In today’s semi-final against England, Ireland won 29-0 to book their place in the world series final against the Aussies, with Murphy Crowe and Beibhinn Parsons the stars of the show.

Athlone native Anna McGann is also a member of the Irish squad.
