'Unsafe' crossing at hospital

There was much support for a call for a review of safety at the pedestrian crossing between the Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar and St Mary’s Hospital when the subject was raised for discussion by Cllr Ken Glynn at the March meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad.

Cllr Glynn said he had been contacted by staff at the hospital who were “extremely concerned” over what was a long-standing issue.

Support for Cllr Glynn’s call came from Cllrs Bill Collentine and Frank McDermott and from the mayor Cllr Aoife Davitt, who all agreed that there is a safety issue at the junction.

The official written response stated that district engineering staff recently had a meeting with management of Mullingar hospital over the issue. “Actions were agreed aimed at improving proper usage of this crossing,” the response concluded. Adding to the response, district engineer Dr Paul McCool stated: “We discussed the issues and they agreed to go off and make plans and we agreed to go off and make with plans and hopefully come together and make an improvement,” he said.
