Niamh Algar

Algar nominated for another BAFTA

Niamh Algar has been nominated for a BAFTA again this year.

The Mullingar native has been nominated in the Leading Actress category in the BAFTA TV Awards for her performance in the critically acclaimed Channel 4 true crime drama Deceit.

She is up against the cream of British acting talent: Denise Gough (Too Close), Emily Watson (Too Close), Jodie Comer (Help), Kate Winslet (Mare of Easttown) and Lydia West (It's a Sin).

She was also nominated for an IFTA for the same role last month.

In a post on social media, Niamh thanked BAFTA for her second nomination in successive years.

"This is such a huge honour to be nominated alongside these incredible women."

Algar earned rave reviews for her portrayal of Lizzie James, the undercover police officer who was asked to start a relationship with Colin Stagg, the chief suspect in the 1992 murder of Rachel Nickell, when Deceit was first broadcast last August.

The four part drama, which can still be viewed on Channel 4's website, features verbatim dialogue from the actual investigation, which led to Stagg being mistakenly accused of murder. Nickell's killer, Robert Napper, was convicted in 2008 on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Last year she was nominated for a BAFTA in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance as Ursula in the drama Calm With Horses.

This year's BAFTA TV Awards take place on Sunday May 8.
