St Ernan’s join Climb with Charlie on Lough Crew trek

Like so many other people in Ireland the members of the St Ernan’s school community in Delvin were deeply touched by the endeavours of Charlie Bird.

Charlie’s Croagh Patrick Climb to raise funds for Pieta House and The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association is taking place this weekend, and St Ernan’s organised a sponsored climb with a dual purpose – to raise money for a defibrillator for the school, with all additional funds raised to be donated to Charlie Bird’s two chosen charities.

The school climb took place to the Loughcrew Cairns, on Sliabh na Caillaighe, just outside Oldcastle, on Wednesday March 16.

Three buses transported the pupils and staff to the car park at the foot of the climb, where a number of the children’s parents joined pupils and teachers for the ascent.

It was a beautiful, clear day and the view at the summit was spectacular.

The children enjoyed the freedom of the space at the top of the hill and enjoyed a picnic with their friends before making their way back down.

When the final figures are calculated the school expect to have raised funds to purchase the defibrillator and have some €1,000 to donate to Charlie Bird’s charities.

The school principal, Catherine Daly, would like to extend her gratitude to all who sponsored the children for the climb and to Athboy Credit Union and Navan Plus Credit Union, who have both given generous sponsorship towards the defibrillator costs.

If anyone would still like to contribute, they can do so by contacting the school.

Red Cross Ukraine Appeal

Annually sixth class in the school hold fundraisers to enable them to purchase their class hoodies, and the current sixth class held a successful fun day to coincide with World Book Day.

Nevaeh Kelly, Isabella Fletcher, Carla Gaffney and Shane Gaffney.

The pupils had an opportunity to dress up as their favourite characters and the sixth class pupils judged the dress-up, held a raffle and had other fun activities on the day.

They did a great job and raised enough money to purchase their new hoodies, and they also had €240 over, which they donated to the Red Cross Ukraine Appeal.

The school also held a collection of relief supplies for Ukraine and the huge generosity of the parent body was clear to see.

The supplies were collected from the school by Dermot McEnroe and David Jones, and the school is grateful to them for their help.
