Village Spring Clean

The sun shone down on Milltownpass on Saturday afternoon as a group of 17 local Tidy Towns volunteers assembled in the church car park to tackle a village clean-up as part of the An Taisce’ National spring clean month.

Mary Corcoran, Tommy Corcoran, Sonia McDonnell, Ann Duignan, Aoife Lynskey, Sam Jefferies and Veronica Lynam.

As the saying goes, many hands make light work, and the group made great progress in just two hours.

Flower beds were weeded, fences were painted, litter was gathered, and grass was cut.

When the hard work was done, the group enjoyed tea and coffee with home baked treats courtesy of Milltownpass Community Action Group.

The Tidy Towns group are looking to build on the progress and are planning a weekly ‘Tidy Thursday’ in the village, when volunteers can go along to get involved in the various village enhancement initiatives.

Committee member Ronan Lynskey said: “We have a spring in our step after today’s village clean up! We got lucky with the weather and we’re delighted with the turnout and the progress we made.

“We’re hoping to keep the momentum going now with our weekly ‘Tidy Thursday’, which we’ll be starting on the 21st of this month. We’ll plan to meet in the Milltownpass church car park every Thursday at 7pm.

“We’ll have a variety of tasks to suit all ages and abilities and volunteers can dip in and out as their availability allows.”

The group are gearing up for the Tidy Towns 2022 Competition and are up against a tight timeline as a lot of work is still to be done.

The 2022 competition was launched on April 7 and Milltownpass Tidy Towns are hoping to build on last year’s score.

The deadline for entry is May 20, and adjudication is likely in early June.

The team are eager to impress the judges when they visit Milltownpass, and each week the group will share details of the area of focus for the upcoming Tidy Thursday, so those interested in getting involved should follow the Milltownpass Tidy Towns Facebook page to keep up to date.

Milltownpass Tidy Towns would like to thank all the volunteers who gave their time, and offer a special thanks to Milltownpass Community Action Group for providing the welcome refreshments on the day.
