Olympic’s Patsy claimed bronze at European Youth Championships

Raithín, Mullingar is home to one of the town’s brightest new boxing prospects. Patsy Joyce (16) returned from the recent EUBC European Youth Boxing Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria with a bronze medal.

Patsy, who came up against fighters two years older than him, made his way through the round of 32, the last 16 and the quarter-finals, before losing out to an opponent from Azerbaijan in the semi-final. The Azeri went on to win the gold medal.

“Patsy’s an eight-time Irish champion. We were expecting that he would win a medal, and we’re very proud of him,” said Patsy’s mother Winnie.

Both Patsy and his mum paid tribute to John Joe Joyce, Davy Joyce and the other coaches at Olympic Boxing Club, Mullingar, who put so much effort into preparing boxers for provincial, national and European success.

Winnie is also very proud of her nephew Jason Nevin (18), also of Olympic BC, who went to Sofia and beat an English boxer in the round of 32, before losing out on a split decision to a Ukrainian fighter.

Both Patsy and Jason thanked their coaches at Olympic BC for all the work they did with them throughout the year.
