Clonard House on market for €850,000

Clonard House, which is for sale by auction next month, has a history for more than 200 years.

Described as a “beautiful five-bed period residence set on 1.7 acres”, it is up for sale (by online auction) for an AMV of €850,000 on Thursday June 23.

There was a house on the site before 1800 and the current structure dates from approximately 1801.

It was built by the second Earl of Belvedere, George Rochfort, who owned large amounts of land around Mullingar, including Belvedere House.

The Diocese of Meath bought the house in 1952 and it became known as The Bishop’s Palace.

Clonard House is a two-storey house, wiht a basement, approached by a sweeping avenue that leads to the front of the property.

It is on a mature site surrounded by trees, which ensure privacy but allow views over Mullingar.

There are some fine old stone outbuildings in a courtyard to the rear of the property.

Inside the house are many original features, from ceiling roses and cornice to window shutters and many grand fireplaces.

Murtagh Bros, the auctioneers handling the sale, says the property has a great deal of potential and would suit purposes such as a boutique hotel, a private retreat or a wedding venue (subject to planning).

It would also make a family home in a sought-after area of Mullingar.

“Clonard House offers the best of both worlds, excellent views and privacy, all within walking distance of Mullingar town,” say the agents.
