St Mary’s Special School, Delvin, has inspired one cycling enthusiast to take on Mondello24 to raise funds for a sensory garden for pupils.

Mervyn Heffernan, from Enfield, has a niece, Laura, who attends St Mary’s Special School which he has said does brilliant work.

“St Mary's is a happy school, where everyone is different, and everyone is special. I have a niece who attends St Mary's, and the staff do brilliant work for children who have special needs.”

Mervyn has decided to take on Mondello24, which is a 24-hour endurance cycle taking place at the race circuit in Kildare.

He has set up a fundraiser ahead of the cycle on June 18 and said all proceeds will go towards St Mary’s Special School.

“If I can get enough small contributions, it will be of great benefit to the children in the school. All funds raised will go to St Mary's to help fund equipment for their sensory garden.”

“It is just a small way of saying thanks to the school for the work they do with children who need that extra care and attention. With your help we can improve the quality of life for these children.”

Mervyn has said that while he does not expect to win the race, he hopes to reach 500km.
