Corroon the star as Holy Family prevail

Cumann na mBunscol Westmeath Football Division 2 final: Holy Family NS, Mullingar 4-7, St Joseph’s NS, Rathwire 2-4

Hugo Corroon led the way for Holy Family NS, Mullingar (formerly Curraghmore NS), as they deservedly defeated St Joseph’s NS, Rathwire by a nine-point margin in last Thursday’s Division 2 football final at TEG Cusack Park.

The winners pounced for an unanswered 1-3 in the opening six minutes. Points from Tom Weir and Corroon (a free) preceded a lovely goal from the latter and a second neat point from Weir.

Remarkably, the saffron and white-clad outfit replicated this with 1-3 of their own by the quarter-hour mark. Scott Cogan’s deflected three-pointer was followed by a hat-trick of points from Josh McGauran (the first of them from a free).

Corroon was the dominant player on show and he scored another 1-1 (the point from a ‘35’) late the first half to leave his side ahead by 2-4 to 1-3 at the break.

A Darragh Ryan point a mere ten seconds after play resumed was followed by goals from Corroon (after great work by Dylan Ledwith) and Darragh Daly to put the boys in maroon and white 11 points clear.

Tadhg Kennedy’s deflected shot to the net gave a glimmer of hope to Rathwire, for whom goalkeeper Miles Anciano was solid throughout.

Corroon rounded off his impressive tally with another brace of points (including a ‘35’) before McGauran rounded off match scoring by converting a difficult free.

After the match, Derek Butler, chairman of Cumann na mBunscol in Westmeath, presented the trophy to the winning captains, Fionn Kelly and Billy Lambden.
