Success for Westmeath Minotaurs on and off the field

Westmeath Minotaurs American Football Club remain undefeated this season, with a record to date of 7-0.

With the playoff No. 1 seed already in hand, we close out our regular season this weekend versus University of Limerick Vikings. Join us Sunday, 2pm at Mullingar RFC for a cracker of a match.

Our most recent match, played last Sunday against newly promoted Cill Dara Crusaders, finished 34-7 in favour of Westmeath. Scoring started on the first drive with a touchdown pass from QB Joe Kinahan to receiver Jack Lynch. Cill Dara responded quickly to level the score, but that brief parity wasn’t to last.

The second quarter brought three Minotaur scores: one 50-yard pick-6 by Jason Owens, and two touchdowns from Joe Kinahan, one with his legs and one caught by receiver Dermot Corroon. Westmeath finished off their scoring with one last touchdown on the ground from Running back Andrew Paton.

It was an incredible day for the Minotaurs’ talented secondary with six picks total including three from Peter Dempsey, one from Adam Corcoran, one from Niall Folan, not to forget that pick-6 from Jason Owens. Finally, a busy day for Jay Bruton saw him find his target on 4/5 PATs.

Fundraiser

On a separate topic, the club has recently presented local charity LARCC with a cheque for €6,003 as a result of our fundraising this year. Westmeath Minotaurs would like to extend sincere thanks to the following groups/people who’s help was instrumental in our fundraising efforts, John Henson and the Athlone St Patrick’s Day Committee, Cllr Frankie Keena and Athlone GAA.
