'Queen of the plough' to open Mullingar Show this year

It is all systems go at the Cullion showgrounds as preparations are finalised for the 2022 Mullingar Agricultural Show on Sunday week next, July 10, which promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

Many attractions are planned to make this a real family day out. The Mounted Garda Unit will be there giving a display on horseback. Declan Nerney and Ray Dolan are providing the musical entertainment. There will be line dancing and a competition for ‘the most appropriately dressed person’ at the show.

Among the attractions that always prove popular with spectators and participants alike, there will be a sheep shearing competition and dog show and much more.

“There is still plenty still to be done and we are looking for more volunteers to come out in the evening and paint rails, cut grass, get the shed ready for the garden produce etc,” said Paddy Donnelly, a man who has been at the forefront of show organising for decades.

There has been no show since 2019 because of Covid which makes this year’s event all the more attractive.

It will be officially opened by Anna May McHugh, “the queen of the plough” at 2pm on Sunday July 10.
