The AXA Farm Insurance Midlands National welcomed more than 4,000 spectators to Kilbeggan racecourse on Friday evening. The atmosphere was electric as all guests enjoyed the event after a tough two years for horse racing.

The first race started at 5:20pm and saw Kilbarry Chianti placing in first, Knocknagappagh in second and Via Rosa in third.

The final and most desired race of the evening was upgraded to a Grade B race with the prize money increased from €75,000 to €100,000.

Many impressive runners competed but Gordon Elliott’s Hurricane Georgie, ridden by Jack Kennedy was the overall winner after an incredible performance. Rachael Blackmore came in second on Popong and in third was Mark McDonagh on Fairyhill Run.

There were ice cream vans, food trailers, the bar was fully stocked and the music was loud.

Minister Robert Troy spoke to the crowd and said, “It’s so positive to see so many here today after a very difficult two years for racing.

“I’m very proud of Kilbeggan and of everyone that has made this day possible. It is a great track so full credit to Paddy Dunican and all the volunteers. It’s great to be here and see everyone in such good form. The sun is shining, it’s the summer holidays so I know everyone is really enjoying themselves.”

Writech Mullingar, The Irish Farmers Journal and Bellamianta Luxury Tan were among the sponsors that helped make the Kilbeggan races a success.

AXA Insurance advisor, Lauren Gavigan said: “It was a great evening, it was a brilliantly run event and we are delighted to be a part of it.

“It was a lot of effort, I don’t think anyone understands the level of background work that goes into something like this but it’s great to have this be such a success after two long years of Covid.”

Kilbeggan also welcomed some of the best dressed ladies in the midlands.

Bellamianta Tan ran the ‘Bellamianta sustainable style competition’ for ladies at the event encouraging them to come dressed in their upcycled outfits.

The winner of the competition was Mary Gardiner from Kilbeggan, who took home prizes worth more than €5,000.

The next races at Kilbeggan are this Friday, July 15, first race 5.30pm.
