Lady Captain’s Prize to the Men draws substantial entry

The season moves along nicely and this week with superb weather for the most part with beautiful playing conditions for the highlight of the week, Lady Captain Paula Davitt’s prize to the men’s branch.

Ladies’ Branch: Play in Pink

Last Wednesday was our Open Play in Pink Fourball with all proceeds raised going to The Cancer Research Institute in Galway. There was a fabulous atmosphere with lots of laughter and the course was awash with pink.

1st was A Kerins and Sara Broderick with 44 points. Second was Mary Seery and Suzanne Duffy with 43 points. Third was Ann Marie Conlon and Siobhan Ruane with 42 points. Fourth was Julie Moore and J Kirby with 42 points. Fifth was Clare Mulligan and D McGettrick with 42 points. Congratulations to all our winners. Nearest the pin on 12 was J Shields. Nearest the pin on 15 was D O’Connor.

Our 9-hole competition winner was Louise Jones with 22 points. Second was Betty Sleator with 20 points. Senior winner Mandy Reilly had 20 points. Super Senior winner was Liz Quinlan with 19 points.

Our Men’s 9-hole winner was Sean Casey with 22 points from Enda Finnerty on 20 points. Best dressed team were Ann Marie Conlon, Siobhan Ruane, Anne Hannon and Fiona Burke. Ladies, your costumes were amazing and your slogan said it all. Let’s give cancer the boot!

Ladies’ Branch: Presentation Night

On Wednesday night last, along with play in pink, the following prizes were presented. Seamus Bracken Butchers Fourball, Swarbrigg’s Shoes, Canore Hygiene and Daili Hair Salon. Congratulations to all the prize winners and sincere thanks to all of our sponsors for their generous support.

Ladies’ Branch: Competitions

This Wednesday’s competition is the 18-hole stableford kindly sponsored by Mary Tunney and Company Solicitors. This Sunday July 17 is our eagerly awaited Major, Lady Captain Paula Davitt’s Prize. Men’s Branch Senior Competition

Played on the hottest day of the year so far over 80 members participated in this week’s long handicap competition sponsored by the Garry Family. With the course in superb condition there were some excellent scores recorded during the day.

Competing over 15 holes, Robert Delaney (19) was the winner of Category 1 with a score of 33 points. Category 2 winner was Rodney Martin (24) with a score of 35 points and Category 3 was won by Peter Dunne (27) with 36 points. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to the sponsor the Garry family for their continuous and generous support.

Sunday Competitions

The long-awaited summer weather finally arrived last weekend and while the sun may not have shone in the morning for Sunday’s Competition, Lady Captain Paula Davitt’s Prize to the Men, it certainly came out in the afternoon.

The course was in tip top condition and looked fabulous in the summer sunshine. The summer conditions also facilitated some excellent scoring on what was another challenging course with 147 players participating in the competition.

The overall winner was David Sloan (19) with 64 nett. Gross winner was Adam Smyth (+5) with 71 gross. Category 1 winner was David B Murphy (6) with 69 nett. Category 2 winner was Kieran McGurran (10) with 66 nett. Category 3 winner was Damian Daly (18) with 68 nett and Category 4 winner was Brain Curran (27) with 69 nett.

The senior winner was James Murtagh (16) with 69 nett and the winner of the Ladies’ 9-hole stableford competition was Síofra Murtagh (12) with 23 points. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to Lady Captain Paula Davitt for her generous sponsorship.

After the competition a number of presentations took place in the clubhouse, which included the following (which were previously reported on):

There were also two presentations for the Hole In One Prize: Greg Cleary, fifth hole and Patrick Davitt Jnr, 15th hole.

In his address to those present Captain David thanked all the sponsors for their support to Mullingar Golf Club and urged all to support them where possible. He also paid tribute to the course maintenance team for all their hard work in keeping the course in such good condition.

Next Week’s Competition

As next Sunday’s competition is Lady Captain Paula Davitt’s Prize to the Ladies, there will only be a men’s 9-hole competition starting at 5.40pm on that day.

Junior Boys

Last Tuesday saw the start of this year’s junior programme with over 70 boys participating in various competitions. Class 1 winners were Charlie Foy (17) with 71 nett, Matthew Thornton (17) with 73 nett and Adam Kenny (18) with 77 nett.

Class 2A winners were Graham Duggan, Owen Meissonave and James Flynn. Class 2B winners were Joshua O’Brien, Ted Aherne and Ethan Meissonave. Class 3A winners were Rain Sheehan, Oisín Kehoe and Shane McSharry. Class 3B winners were Ryan Turbitt, Ethan Nally and Daragh Ryan.

The Boys’ U15 team to play Esker Hills on Saturday July 16 will be announced after this week’s results. Mullingar will play away to Esker Hill in a best of five matches competition. As the away team Mullingar have only two matches at home and three away.

Celebrity Visitor

This weekend we had a visit from local legend and national and international music star and mindfulness advocate Bressie (Niall Breslin), who played a round on Saturday afternoon with club PRO John Geoghegan and Niall’s brother-in-law, Podge O’Donnell.

The lads got around 18 holes in three hours on the dot and enjoyed every minute of it and are working on some ideas to promote Mullingar and Mullingar Golf Club. Watch this space!
