Snap up the chance to join Athlone Photography Club

Athlone Photography Club launches their 2022/2023 programme on Wednesday September 7 in the Abbey Road Artists Studio (close to the Radisson Blu Hotel), Athlone and have issued an open invitation to all interested photographers from any level to discover more about the club.

After two years of turbulent times during the pandemic, and bi-weekly Zoom meetings, the club are delighted to reopen the physical doors for the 2022/2023 season.

The programme of events planned for the year include talks and workshops with some of the world’s leading photographers in landscape, portrait, wildlife, composite, sport, street and press photography which will all be revealed on the night.

With two landscape trips and a portrait shoot already organised for this quarter, budding photographers and experienced photographers will gleam practical learning and hands on support and even share their own tips with the club.

As well known American photographer, Jay Maisel, has been quoted saying, “If you are out there shooting, things will happen for you. If you’re not out there, you’ll only hear about it.”

The club support photographers with all levels of experience. Photo challenges are run throughout the year at novice, intermediate and advanced levels and winners are announced at the end of the year for the best in each category.

Athlone Photography Club started in 2013 with around 30 members and current membership is 50-plus. Their primary focus is to provide a learning environment for all members regardless of their photographic skills, carried out in a friendly and respectful environment.

Affiliated with the Irish Photographic Federation (IPF) and competing at national level against other photography clubs, support is the core of the Athlone club.

The club were winners of the National Shield in 2015, a competition dedicated to novices and intermediate level.

They also finished eighth overall out of 26 clubs at the 2019 National Club Finals, which are for more advanced and skilled photographers.

Last year the club exhibited members’ work as part of the RTÉ Drama Festival fringe.

New members are welcome to the open night, to experience what the club have to offer. Everyone with an interest in photography and of any skill level could gleam something from being a member.

The heart of the club is the supportive and close knit community of artists who love to build each other up and learn together.
