Seasonal amenity warden patrols continue in September

Westmeath County Council again set up seasonal amenity warden patrols for 2022, as part of their anti-litter initiatives.

This year the council doubled the deployment of wardens and there are crews based in Mullingar and Athlone.

The seasonal wardens provide additional support to the municipal districts to maintain amenity sites around the county. Their work complements the full-time community and litter wardens working in both areas.

The seasonal wardens provide cover during weekends and bank holiday periods when the amenities are busiest; they have been in place since early summer and will work up to the end of the summer season in September.

At the presentation of uniforms to the wardens, Cllr Vincent McCormack, mayor of Athlone Municipal District said: “This is one of many initiatives Westmeath County Council have in place to help keep our tourist amenity areas clean.

“It helps to encourage visitors to respect amenity areas and remove their litter when they leave. The seasonal wardens provide a high visibility presence in these areas and engage with the public to advise them of local bye laws.

“They also provide practical support by handing out litter bags, dog waste bags, and other equipment where required.”

Richard Muldarry, on behalf of Lakeland Security, who provide the seasonal wardens to Westmeath County Council, said: “We are delighted to be working once again with Westmeath County Council to provide seasonal amenity wardens.

"We find when we engage with the public on our patrols, the response is generally positive. We try to work with people to advise them on keeping the amenity areas as clean as possible and respect the local bye laws.”
