Manchan Magan to host event in Luan Gallery next week

Luan Gallery will host an evening of conversation between Westmeath based writer and documentary-maker, Manchán Magan and a number of artists taking part in an exhibition in the Gallery on Wednesday of next week, September 14.

The event, which is free to members of the public and gets underway at 6pm, is supported by Creative Ireland and Westmeath County Council. It forms part of the accompanying outreach of the exhibition, Breakings Borders, which brings together seven visual artists working in various mediums. The artists respond to physical, psychological, and societal forms of borders and how we, as a society, can identify, debate and address these barriers.

Manchán Magan, a much-admired writer and documentary-maker has written books on his travels in Africa, India and South America. He writes occasionally for The Irish Times, reports on travel for various radio programmes, and has presented dozens of documentaries on issues of world culture for TG4, RTÉ & Travel Channel.

He will discuss a series of topics with three of the exhibiting artists, Trudi can der Elsen; Myra Jago and Beata Piekarska-Daly related to their art practice, including the current exhibition, how the notion of borders and boundaries are reflected in the artist's works and the role of art in the digital age.

Trudi van der Elsen is a contemporary multi-media artist, based in Ireland since 2004. Her practice includes painting, drawing, installation work, performance and lens-based media. Myra Jago is an Irish oil painter living in Wicklow. Her work looks at our relationship with our world.

Beata Piekarska-Daly is a Polish-born and an Irish-based visual artist, who is socially and educationally engaged through her multidisciplinary art practices.
