The Downs GAA Family Fun Day

The strong sense of community at The Downs was evident in the attendance at the local GAA club family fun day on Saturday afternoon. The weather wasn’t ideal, but what rain there was didn’t stop the activities, which ranged from fun and novelty events to a mixed blitz, inflatable darts, tug-o-war, indoor stalls and face-painting.

There was music on the gig rig and a visit from the Tailteann Cup accompanied by club representatives Luke Loughlin and Kevin O’Sullivan.

Congratulations are due to the committee who did an outstanding job organising the event and keeping everything running smoothly, and there is a special mention for Buckley’s SuperValu who provided food on the day – the burgers were praised all round!

Later in the evening, there was a commemoration of The Downs Ladies LGFA’s 20th birthday in the clubhouse. Alp Luachra provided live music and younger and older members of the club enjoyed that. It was wonderful to see all the players past and present, committee members and supporters all joining in on the night in celebrating the milestone.

The committee would like to thank the following businesses and people for their contributions: Eoin Kennedy (Buckley’s SuperValu), Focus Busters, Kidzcove, Vinny and Holly Hynes, Westmeath Sports Partnership, Mullingar Pewter, Kevin Staunton, Derek Butler (The Downs NS), Kenny Rabbitte and Band Alp Luachra, Joe Daly, David Bradley, Brian Thornton, Martin Murtagh, Paul Kelleghan, Paul Kelly, Joe Corroon, Lily Reid, Alanna Corroon, Fergus Murphy, John Murphy, Sean Monaghan, Sean Carroll, all our musicians and dancers, contributors to the bake sale and all who helped at the various stalls throughout the day. Without all of whom the day would not have been such a success.
