In the footsteps of Andrea and Mark – Noel's Cancer Society fundraiser

The last 11 months have been particularly tough for Noel O’Callaghan and his family following the loss of his niece and nephew.

Mark Rogers died from colorectal cancer and Andrea Geraghty died from small cell cancer of the bladder, a rare form of cancer. They were both in their 40s.

At the moment, Noel’s brother is undergoing treatment for a different form of cancer, forcing the entire family to relive the same trauma all over again.

In response to the terrible news, Noel has set out to raise money and awareness for the Irish Cancer Society.

“I have chosen to demonstrate, in some small way, the resilience and endurance of Andrea and Mark.

“The first is the easiest, to focus the mind and body on what is ahead. The second and third will be for sure in their footsteps.

“When the pain kicks in and I hit the wall, what of it, I made it to 64 but sadly my niece and nephew did not.”

Noel is planning to take on the An Cosantoir 10km track as his first challenge and this will take place on October 12 at the Phoenix Park Dublin.

His next challenge is to climb Croagh Patrick, three days later on October 15.

His final fundraiser will be the Dublin Marathon on October 30.

Noel is dedicated to raising as much money for the charity as possible so is encouraging people to donate through the GoFundMe page.

He aims to raise €2,000 and is already past half way.

Noel said: “Imagine if your donation was the one that provided the answer to save the life of someone you don’t even know – how wonderful would that be?”
