Keena pulls away in League of Ireland scoring charts

Sligo Rovers as a team has been inconsistent in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division, but Mullingar man Aidan Keena continues to impress.

Rovers' hopes of securing a place in Europe hit a setback last night (Tuesday) when they went down one nil to Derry in the Brandywell.

Prior to last night's defeat, Rovers took on Keena’s old club Shelbourne at Tolka Park on Friday night and left with a 2-0 win, with Keena’s 66th minute drive sealing the win. Frank Liivak had opened the scoring for the Bit O’Red in the 23rd minute.

The Westerners have an uphill battle ahead to reach the Europa Conference League, and currently sit in fifth, ten points off in-form St Patrick’s Athletic, who also have a game in-hand.

Keena’s goal against Shelbourne was his 15th of the season, and his 18th in all competitions. He currently sits on top of the League of Ireland Premier Division scoring charts, five goals ahead of Eoin Doyle (St Pat’s) and Jamie McGonigle (Derry City).

Next up for Keena and Sligo is a trip to Derry City on Tuesday (today, 7.45pm).
