Boone delivers new album Trojan Horse

Artist Zack Boone is releasing a new 10-track album, Trojan Horse, this Friday October 14.

Describing it as a “deep-dive into some ‘tricky’ modern subjects”, with song titles such as Are We Human?, Poor Little Rich Girl and Feeling is The New Fact, Boone, aka Glenn McMahon musically explores the themes of deception and subjugation.

This is Boone’s third album of original songs, which was recorded in his own home project studio located just outside Mullingar.

Using instruments including electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitars, ukuleles, synths, and various sound samples, he has created a record in the electro-acoustic genre.

Eight songs contain vocals, two others are instrumentals, and took Boone three and half years to write and record. It is mixed and mastered entirely by Boone himself.

"I'm extremely interested in all the processes, all the engineering and production side of things as well as the creative side... I love it all."

While Trojan Horse was started before the pandemic lockdown, Zack says it became a form of “self-therapy” during an incredible time in history.

The "lockup" as Boone calls it, afforded everyone “a lot more time” to work creatively.

"It would be a terribly wasted missed opportunity if you were a creator and you didn't do something during that."

Speaking of the record, he explains that it was a very organic process, and not one that was commercially driven.

"It's much harder to create a smash hit mainstream pop single than people think, it's just something that doesn't interest me. The music that I end up making is just something that comes through me... it's a form of self-therapy that manifests as whatever it does, mainstream or otherwise.

"It has a life of its own and a lot of the time you have to get out of the way of that, and just be its conduit, its medium, its vessel, you're not really the creator.

"These things reveal themselves and what is required for a song reveals itself too, if you just have patience and if you just stick with it"

One track contains instrument performances by local musicians Cathy Byrne and Eddie Reynolds, while the album artwork was designed by Mullingar-based graphic designer Amanda Freeman of Cretivegenius.ie.

“Some songs took years to complete but one particular track, the final album track, took just six and half minutes to write, perform and record - it was a guitar improvisation,” he explains.

One of his songs has also been chosen as the sole theme tune for upcoming American documentary series ‘Spooky Kisses Haunts’, which is due for a worldwide Netflix and Network TV release. Check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XSJyoqd4wE
