Over-60s film is part of Still Voices Film Festival

A special screening for audiences over 60 takes place in the Mullingar Arts Centre at midday on Friday November 11.

As part of the Still Voices Film Festival, ‘The Straight Story’ will be screened, and tells the story of 73-year-old Alvin Straight, who learns that his estranged brother Lyle is critically ill. Unable to drive, Alvin embarks on a journey from Iowa to Wisconsin, by riding a lawnmower. Will he succeed?

Directed by David Lynch and featuring Richard Farnsworth, Sissy Spacek and Harry Dean Stanton, The Straight Story is based on a true story and was filmed in chronological order, following Alvin Straight’s actual route.

Co-founder and festival director of Still Voices Film Festival, Ronan O’Toole says they are “thrilled to be back for our sixth edition” of the festival, which runs across counties Westmeath and Longford from Wednesday November 9 to Sunday November 13.

“As always, our short film screenings will take centre stage and we are doing things a little bit differently this year. We have moved screening times to the afternoon and evenings to ensure as many people see these fantastic films as possible.

“Our short film programme is genuinely one of the best we’ve ever had, and once again we’re delighted to achieve a 50/50 split of male and female directors. We also have the inclusion of some exciting new categories.”

‘The Straight Story’ shows Friday November 11 at noon. Booking www.mullingarartscentre.ie or 044 934 7777.
