Government announces €4.5m in funding for TUS

The Minister for Further and Higher Education, Simon Harris, has announced funding of €4.5m for the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), which has one of its main campuses in Athlone.

The allocation, which is part of a €23.47 million package of funding for five technological universities, is due to be used "in key areas such as digital infrastructure, building capacity in research, and in improving governance and systems integration."

Speaking today (Friday), Minister Harris said: "This funding is part of the Transformation Funding, which has seen €60 million already invested in making our technological universities (TUs) a reality.

"The funding today will help build on that important work and ensure TUs have the capacity to grow."

The chief executive of the Higher Education Authority, Dr Alan Wall, together with the Chair and Board of the HEA, also welcomed the recent expansion of the sector and the support of higher education institutions through the Technological University Transformation Fund (TUTF).

"The successful establishment of five TUs attests to the transformational development of the technological sector and the positive impact of the TUTF," said Dr Wall.

"The Higher Education Authority supports technological universities and the ongoing reform of the higher education landscape, recognising the role of TUs at a regional level and in making significant contributions to national objectives and internationally."
